Who We Are

We are a ministry of the Warrenton Church of Christ.  Our first directive is to teach the Bible.
Our second directive is to prepare our students for success in school.

One of our most important philosophies is to teach the children, not only to be kind to one another, but also to advocate for themselves when others are not kind.  As we are teaching tiny people, a lack of understanding of personal space is very common.  Social skills are of prime importance.   When we see a behavior that might be aggressive or beyond respecting personal space, we try to catch it in the moment as it is a teachable moment.
Our protocols are based on the following concepts:
1.  Recognizing that we all have a right of personal space is key.
2.  Recognizing that everyone has a personal "bubble" and it should be respected.  Obviously, no hitting, pushing and the like.
3.  Learning self advocacy for themselves as an important life skill.
4.  Learning when and how to get help from a trusted adult.
5.  Conflict resolution skills.  See protocol below.
6.  Preventing possible conflicts when needed.
7.  The goal is to seek reconciliation with one another, not victory over another person, or punishment.

8.  Redemption of any infraction is not only possible but an important goal.

Our protocol is as follows:
Upon seeing a conflict arise:
We bring the children out of the area of conflict, have the children face each other, look at each other and we say, "Tell your friend that you don't like _________."   We make sure that  the words are both spoken and heard, that the words are acknowledged and that there is a commitment spoken to refrain from what ever the infraction might be.  The spoken words by the children are important.
The animal of the child who displayed inappropriate behavior will be moved down on their behavior chart, and they will move it down themselves.  Depending on the time of day, they will have an opportunity to move their animal back up.
Repeat as necessary.  Separation of those in conflict may be practiced until the principle of respect is learned.

Curriculum

Picture
There are many definitions for curriculum, they all include this concept:“goals and plans for children to acquire skills and knowledge through activities, experiences and opportunities”.

Our focus is to prepare our students have the skills needed for success in their education career.  Students must learn to not only LOVE to learn, but they must learn HOW to learn.
We pull on 2 different curricula to build a vibrant program that will challenge your child.  We use Handwriting Without Tears, as well as the A-Beka program.  This does not limit us to utilizing a variety of other programs that will enhance the excitement and academic progress of our students.
We believe that an engaged teacher, one who has some control over their own classroom lesson plans, creates a vibrant educational atmosphere.  A vibrant atmosphere is one where everyone, teacher and students, are eager to  participate in the lessons of the day.

All staff are prepared to recognize behavioral milestones of each age group, 2 1/2 - 6 years old.   All lessons are geared toward planning and recognizing that learning has taken place at an age appropriate level.

ASSESSMENTS
We assess our 4 - 5 year old students three times per year.  The first two assessments are informal and age appropriate.  Those assessments are kept in the classroom for teacher and parent reference.  The teacher makes note of knowledge demonstrated during class, and marks down that achievement during planning times.  The 3rd assessment, done in the early spring, is a formal assessment and is done to make certain that all of our students are ready for their kindergarten readiness assessments at the time of registering for kindergarten.  Should we see any special needs that your child might have we contact the parent as early as possible so that individualization can occur as soon as possible.  Usually any special needs are noted very early in the year.

Assessments for our 2 1/2 - 3 year olds occurs twice per year and are informal assessments as is age appropriate.  We want to hold a proper balance between recording progress while also maintaining a relaxed atmosphere that best enhances early learning.
